Junior Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Cross Country · Raider Runners Compete at SFL Championships

The SMSXC Raider Runners competed in the Sunflower League Championships on Saturday October 17.  The SFL meet was hosted at Olathe District Activities Center (ODAC) over two sessions.  The C Team races were held in the morning.  Despite the windy conditions, 28 of the 30 runners achieved season best times and 15 of them earned all time bests!  Leading the way for the 2nd Place Girl’s C Team squad were Ella Buss (7th), Olivia Ponnuru (8th), Eliana Wilson (10th), and Taylor Venable (16th).  Leading the way for the 7th place C Team Boys squad was Daniel Burns (11th) and Mack Green (24th).

The second session of races was held in the evening under the stadium lights of the facility.  Cooler temps and very little wind provided ideal conditions for racing.  Team placings for SMSXC were the Varsity Girls in 7th, the Varsity Boys in 8th, the JV Girls in 3rd, and the JV Boys in 4th.  The ideal conditions allowed 25 out of 28 runners to earn season best times and 16 out of 28 achieved all time bests.  Hannah Gibson was the outstanding performer of the evening winning the girls varsity race in exciting fashion in a sprint to the finish.  Her time of 18:09 re-sets her school record.  Other placers included Nick Petrella (V Boys 16th), Veronica Fast (JV Girls 10th), Finn Wilson (JV Boys 5th), and Will Kirsch (JV Boys 20th).

The varsity squad will be back in action on Saturday 10/24 for the KSHSAA 6A Regional Championship at SM Park.  This meet will be the qualifying meet for the state championship held the following weekend.
